Heat, thunderstorms, gas prices and mosquitoes threatened our June 7 canoe overnighter, but the biggest threat was downriver at the missing "free" campground!

Aug 8-10, White Mts. Backpack - Younger Scouts
Scouts will plan the route, determine campsites. They will make some good decisions and some bad decisions, too. Adult leaders will assure safety and a fair hiking pace.
Most first and second-year scouts will have only done car camping previously, so one or more meetings this summer will see that everyone is appropriately packed, has broken-in hiking boots, and knows what to expect during the trip. Also, because all scouts on the trip will be under 14 and/or not yet First Class, this will not be an “extreme” backpacking trip. Contact Mr. Popik.
After paddling 15 miles, scout leaders were stunned to learn that the "free" campground was now operated by a new owner and would cost our 11 scouts and 6 adults, a total of $119! Mr. Sewell thought the Camp Manager had a familiar last name, so he mentioned that he grew up in Bridgton, Maine and was the Camp Manager related to an old classmate. No, but the Camp Manager said he had been the Police Chief in Bridgton and that the name Sewell rang a bell! Mr. Sewell quickly asked if the Camp Manager knew his stepfather Dr. Richards? Indeed he did fondly know Dr. Richards. "Good doc that Richards, helped my family. Okay so the scouts can stay for free. Hmmm Sewell , now I remember, the only unsolved case in Bridgton Police history - an overdue library book about chess. Mr. Sewell do you play chess? Mr. Sewell?" The above photo was taken of a disquised man paddling to New Hampshire."Left the book back in the car..."
Environmental Science Merit Badge Dillon Reports on Endangered NH Bat Environmental Sci.MB

Endangered species - the small-footed bat

     Reporter: Life Scout Dillon W.
The small-footed bat is endangered in New Hampshire, but is not endangered in the U.S. This bat weighs less than a quarter of an ounce and is very small in size. It has long yellow fur and unlike other bats, it has a black "facemask", black ears, and does not have a dark shoulder patch.
It is endangered, because there is only one known hibernation spot (hibernaculum - ed.) in New Hampshire. It breeds once a year and produces only one offspring. It normally lives in the Midwest United States. They are typically found in caves but can also be found in rock crevices, loose tree bark, and even buildings as long as they are near rivers.
Editor: Loss of habitat is one way that a species can become endangered. Disease is another way. What disease is now threatening New England bats? Read more .
