Cycling Merit Badge starts Summer

Mr. Wright demonstrated how to repair a flat on HIS bike. Scouts will
later demonstrate how to repair a flat on THEIR bike.
|
Sunny, blue skies for Bike Clinic and 10 mile ride to Hollis
Scouts arrived with their bikes at Mine Falls to learn basic bicycle
maintenance and safety from Mr. Wright.
Seats and handlebars needed to be adjusted.
Some chains were a little rusty and needed to be lubricated. Some tires needed air.
And maybe some bikes mysteriously shrank over the winter. But with some instruction and
elbow grease, the bikes were made ready.
Next, scouts were taught safety rules. Helmuts were checked and adjusted.
Time to roll on the trip route lead by Mr. Wright.

Aug 8-10, White Mts. Backpack - Younger Scouts
Scouts will plan the route, determine campsites.
They will make some good decisions and some bad decisions, too.
Adult leaders will assure safety and a fair hiking pace.
Most first and second-year scouts will have only done car camping previously, so
one or more meetings this summer will see that everyone is appropriately packed,
has broken-in hiking boots, and knows what to expect during the trip. Also, because
all scouts on the trip will be under 14 and/or not yet First Class, this will not be an “extreme”
backpacking trip. Contact Mr. Popik.

Scouts bike away to Hollis under cobalt blue skies.
More work is ahead for scouts who are working on cycling merit badge as they must
plan and pedal the following:
two 10 mile trips, two 15 mile trips, two 25 mile trips,
and one 50 mile trip.
Those are just some of the
requirements for Cycling Merit badge, click here for the full list..

Endangered species - the small-footed bat
Reporter: Life Scout Dillon W.
The small-footed bat is endangered in New Hampshire, but is not endangered in the U.S.
This bat weighs less than a quarter of an ounce and is very small in size. It has long yellow fur
and unlike other bats, it has a black "facemask", black ears, and does not have a dark shoulder patch.
It is endangered, because there is only one known hibernation spot (hibernaculum - ed.) in New Hampshire.
It breeds once a year and produces only one offspring. It normally lives in the Midwest United States.
They are typically found in caves but can also be found in rock crevices, loose tree bark, and even buildings
as long as they are near rivers.
Editor: Loss of habitat is one way that a species can become endangered. Disease is another
way. What disease is now threatening New England bats?
