EAGLE COURT OF HONOR A SUCCESS
Congratulations to Ben Filteau, Don Griffin, Kevin Wang and Alex Gerlitz in achieving the highest award in Boy Scouting. Only 4 out of every 100 Scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout. This past Sunday, Troop 19 Scouts, Leaders and Friends recognized these fine young men in their outstanding accomplishment. The Scouts of Troop 19 conducted the opening ceremony. Assistant Scoutmaster, Robert Bisbee presented an inspirational poem he wrote about “What is an Eagle Scout”. We were fortunate to have Mayor Lozeau speak to our Eagle Scouts with commendations from the city of Nashua. She also reminded the recipients the importance of giving back to the community. Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scott Champagne served as Master of Ceremonies. Three Troop 19 Leaders, Mr. Richard Perkins, Mr. Matt Griffin, Mr. Jim Woodward and Mr. Dennis Gerlitz (Alex’s grandfather from Seattle) presented the Eagle Awards. Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmasters Mr. Nate McManus and Mr. Adam Wolff presented letters of accolade from several distinguished public officials and membership registration for the National Eagle Scout Association. The Eagle Oath and Charge was administered by Scoutmaster, Mr. Greg Anthony. Our Eagle Scouts each gave a short acceptance speech and shared some interesting stories about their journey to Eagle. The Court of Honor closed with the Benediction by the troop’s Pilgrim Church representative and Committee Member, Mr. Chuck Howe. A reception followed in Fellowship Hall hosted by the Shepard’s.
A few observations— It was encouraging to have the Mayor in attendance and she provided an excellent message to our youth. As young Tenderfoots and Second Class Scouts, a few of our Eagles remarked on how witnessing an Eagle Ceremony provided motivation to be up there some day. More Scouts from Troop 19 would have been nice. At least 15 Eagle Scouts attended on Sunday! Mr. Bisbee’s poem was well written and we will have it on our website shortly. Look for a new website section, “Eagle’s Aerie” The troop’s dynamic program keeps the youth’s interest during the teen years and they establish some great friendships among their peers keeping them connected to Scouting. If you are not an involved parent—you are missing out. You can be in the background to help the troop, participate vicariously and still give your son the “space” he needs.
TROOP 19 IN THE NEWSPAPER TODAY! Today’s Nashua Telegraph features Troop 19’s Grand Canyon Trip in the Neighbor’s Section. “Scouts Hike the Wild West” along with two color photos!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GOOD TURN
Alex Gerlitz, Connor Popik, Dan Hein, Luke Yost, and Mr. Yost all pitched in along with the Scoutmaster to move the yard sale items from the church basement to the upstairs hall. By my calculations we completed the equivalent of a hike up Mt.Washington based on the number stairs climbed! Also, Pilgrim Church has a thrift shop and if you have clothing or household items you wish to donate, they will gladly take them to help those in need.
TROOP 19 POINT SYSTEM STANDINGS
1.) Rambunctious Rodents- 306 pts 2.) Puma Patrol- 260 pts 3.) Frozen Fire- 240 pts 4.) Black Bears- 168 pts
We have one month to go on the point system. Anything can happen. My vision is for all four patrols to be competitive and have a solid chance of winning. It is not out of any patrol’s reach. Do you best on Disaster Night –Be prepared! Where are your patrol outing plans for your patrol activity? Time is going by quickly! Being a Patrol Leader takes work and requires the help of everyone in the Patrol. To be a good leader, you must first learn how to be a good follower.
TROOP MEETING REMINDERS Disaster Night is this Tuesday! Warning! Blood and mayhem will be present on Tuesday night. The patrols will be competing in a variety of scenarios to test their skills on first aid, Patrol Leadership in managing a crisis situation and teamwork. Saco River Canoe Trip Permission slips will be distributed for this overnight canoe trip on the Saco River. Just think, you don’t have to carry your backpack! Let the river do the work –well you do have to know how to paddle and be a swimmer. Read about the trip on the permission slip and look for an update on the troop website shortly. Watch for announcements for swim tests at the Merrimack YMCA and an upcoming practice session on canoeing. Adult leaders and Scouts planning to provide leadership on this trip are expected to complete both Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat Training. Both are on-line courses you can access from the troop website. |
